While unsanctioned AI tools are likely causing great consternation for CIOs/CISOs, the industry has a long track record of clinical teams “pushing the envelope” on new technology. From WhatsApp and SMS for care coordination, to document sharing via Dropbox, to FaceTime and Skype for early telehealth. These shadow uses carry real risks (e.g., privacy and security exposure) but also serve as real-world proof points for innovation. As with the earlier tech examples, vendors will quickly learn which tools are in demand, what features are needed, and which workflows clinicians are eager to disrupt.
