I was attending my very first HIMSS and entered the opening reception in a large hall with thousands of people in it. Every seat was taken and I was pretty overwhelmed by the size of it all. I walked to the side of the room and got a small plate of food to wander around with. In the very back of the room, standing up against the wall, was a man using the top of a garbage can as a table with his own small plate of food just watching the crowd. I immediately thought to myself, “I bet that guy is awesome.” I walked over to say hi and chatted with him for a bit. When I asked him what he did, he told me that this was his party and he was the President of HIMSS, Steve Lieber. I was pretty shocked that this was the first guy I had met. After a 15 minute conversation I had learned a lot about the HIMSS organization, their activities worldwide, and the conference in general. Steve helped me feel welcome at my first HIMSS!
