  1. RE: last week’s MEDITECH update and the new Expanse platform….it’s interesting the amount of traction and credit MEDITECH is receiving for bringing a “cloud” “web-based” EMR to market with Expanse. I think it’s important that your readers know it is the latest release of the 6.16 naming convention/platform. It’s still client server, MUMPS based architecture. You need look no further than their own branding guide, or a Navin Hafty and Associates newsletter…..

“MEDITECH Expanse is our web-based, next generation EHR platform. The name Expanse is replacing WEB EHR and 6.16. Expanse is a unifying platform for the future, and we will therefore no longer publicly use numbering schemes in communication with the market and customers.”

“MEDITECH’s Web EHR platform (version 6.16) has a new name: Expanse. MEDITECH has opted to remove the numbering scheme from its web-based platform, as well as from any future platforms.”

  2. The same literature states that Expanse “minimizes costly third-party, three-tier connections and highly
regimented device requirements.” The majority of Expanse is accessible through a web browser. Prior versions did not have this technology.

  3. Don’s statements aren’t entirely accurate and can be misleading. 6.16/Expanse is largely built in M-AT and web technologies, with those applications being written completely from the ground up in this new technology. 6.16/Expanse DOES have a subset of applications yet to be rewritten, the bulk of which consists of the general financials (General Ledger, Cost Accounting, Accounts Payable…). So, yes, those applications are NPR based (Client/Server), but modified with a web overlay. In that respect, Don is correct.
