Cerner chief: VA contract taught him about ‘fake news’ that may involve a competitor

Cerner President Zane Burke blames an unnamed competitor (presumably Epic) for publicizing negative reports about the DoD’s MHS Genesis project, labeling the resulting coverage as “fake news” in Friday’s annual shareholder meeting.

  1. If I’m a DoD user that has been part of the Genesis pilot, I am not a fan of Zane Burke for sweeping our issues under the rug by saying the roll-out has gone incredibly well. Just because information does not paint a positive picture does not make it fake.

  2. I guess the logical conclusion to Cerner’s poor initial performance with the federal government is that Epic has moles in the Pentagon leaking information to Politico that is somehow “fake”

  3. I throw all “fake news” claimants in the same treason-weasel bag. Maybe he’s just a garden variety weasel though.

  4. Regarding Cerner’s “negative reports about the DoD’s MHS Genesis project” as “fake news”: Histalk pages for the last decade are filled with “news” about health systems tearing out Cerner systems and replacing them with Epic, notably, Mayo, Aurora Health, etc. Was that all fake? I suspect DoD will regret their decision like all those other large (but smaller than DoD) systems dissatisfied with Cerner but being a government bureaucracy and with the incredible lobbying and connections by Cerner they’ll be wishing they had VistA back in the next decade or two or three.

  5. Mr. H, do you think you can score an interview with Director Behler? I’d like to see his reaction to being called a liar by Cerner.

  6. Hey Mr. H.

I would suggest you replace the annual HISsie awards with the years best FAKE NEWS awards. It worked for me. I will grab my popcorn and watch.

  7. An Epic spokesperson provided the following statement to Becker’s Hospital Review. “Epic was not involved in publicizing the DOD report calling Cerner’s MHS Genesis project, “neither operationally effective, nor operationally suitable.” We would suggest that instead of dismissing these concerns as “fake news,” Cerner help its users by fixing the problems outlined in the report.”
