  1. About Lahey and Epic, from the press release: “Our focus is on keeping our patients well, and this system offers us the latest tools to better manage chronic disease, ensure proactive health and wellness in a community-based setting, and more effectively control health care costs,” said Grant. …More than 100 new jobs will be created at Lahey Heath to implement and support the Epic system and to ensure it is utilized effectively by all Lahey Health providers. The initial costs and maintenance costs are staggering, yet I await a study that demonstrates inporved outcomes and reduced costs of care.

My perspective: the inital outlays to wire these facilities and the maintenance to keep them available and usable is sufficiently large that overall health care costs with such systems can only suck up a greater percentage of US GNP. going further, The comments about these systems improving health are not substantiated by the data.

What I do notice is that the services and medicines available to rank and file patients are deteriorating rapidly, as the moneys are shifted from patients to devices.
