I was asked by Patient Safety, MD, about what "axe" I have to grind. Another astute question was why report to the FDA. There is a law called the Federal Food Drug and Cosmetic Act that protects the safety of people from drugs and devices. The problem reported was caused by defective software running a device that ordered the incorrect test. These devices have been known to break down, have been known to misidentify, have been known to cause malpractice, have been known to disrupt chronology, have been known to generate errors, have been known to cause patient injury, have been knon to cause patient death, have been know ny day to day users to have more defects than are reported to public repositories of defects, of which the FDA is pre-emminent, and are known to cause data to go missing, all of which are grinders to sharpen my axe.

The wonderful interview above reveals more on the inner workings of the HIT industry. Thank you Mr. HIStalk, and thank you Dr. Chaiken.

This is not exactly whast doctors do professionally: "We should be able to move in the clinical space where physicians and nurses and others are doing their skill set around pattern recognition and treating the patients. IT is the source of that."

We’re still learning, in healthcare, about that user interface. We’re still learning about how to put the applications together in a clinical workflow that’s going to be valuable to the patients and to the people who are providing care. Let’s be patient. Let’s give them a chance to figure out the right way to do this. Let’s give the application providers an opportunity to make this better.

II agree, we're still learning about experimental devicesl.

These sentiments about "being patient" might have been appropriate - if the subjects of these experimental devices were lab rats, not mothers, fathers, sons, daughters, and ... you get the idea.
