McKesson announced this morning that Patrick Blake, 45, has been promoted to executive vice president and group president of McKesson Technology Solutions, effective immediately. He replaces Pamela Pure, who left the company in March 2009, with responsibilities over McKesson Provider Technologies, McKesson Health Solutions, RelayHealth, and McKesson’s International Operations Group.

Blake was previously president of McKesson Specialty Care Solutions, its specialty drug distribution services division. He joined the company in 1996 and held previous roles in the company’s drug distribution businesses. He will report to CEO John Hammergren and serve on McKesson’s executive committee.

  1. Very excited to see what Mr. Blake will bring to this position. We’ve seen great things in the past from MTS. Hopefully Mr. Blake will take things to the next level.

  2. I wonder what the track record is for non-HIS execs in running HIS companies. The execs brought in to run SMS after Siemens acquired struggled and GE has underperformed with non-HIS folks leading the old IDX.

Then, of course, it might not be the execs but rather the culture and the products (though I think Siemens could be in a lot better shape now if different strategic decisions had been made in 2001-2002). Sometimes new is simply better — new thinking without legacy baggage. Look at Athena, SCI, and eClinicalWorks.

In fact, Siemens was partnered with both Athena and SCI earlier in the decade. I’ll bet together they’re worth more now than Siemens healthcare IT business (Athena is public; they’re worth $1.08B as of today and SCI has 300+ customers).

Best of luck to Patrick Blake.

  3. The writing is on the wall with this announcement. Putting a non-HIS executive to run MPT and catch up to Epic thru innovation, says one thing. It is only a matter of time until McK sells the division.

  4. Is it just me or does this guy have a head shaped like a block?

Doesn’t matter anymore. Healthcare IT has come down to market share and marketing (hype). Own a big slice and protect it with a moat around the castle.

  5. Is it just my imagination or does this guy look like the jerk football or lacrosse player who drove the Beemer convertible and was also the president of his ΔΚΕ chapter that all the dorm rats and regular guys on campus hated? Think Doug Neidermeyer in Animal House. His ΔΚΕ sweetheart would have probably been named Pamela Pure.

  6. Caveman…I am with you on that bet.

Kind of interested in seeing how all of Hammergren’s changes play out. Fresh set of eyes with from all I have read a great track record of success & improvement.
