I've never been to HIMSS, but the "less commercial" aspects that you're talking about sound a lot like AMIA. Yes the geek factor is high at a lot of the presentations, but it's always been a relatively small conference and its academic bent means that it will be less likely (I hope) to downsize. And its in San Francisco this year...

If you follow the moving target called the Stimulus Bill, as of February 8, 2009 778 pages there exists a proposed $17 billion in HIT stimulus. Now executing a simple mathematical manipulation called addition and division, please no risk adjustment, the number of healthcare organizations in the U.S. have been reported to be approx. 6500 and the number of physician practices (3 physicians or more) estimated at 34,490 equals 40,990 stakeholders.

Next, take the moving stimulus money at today’s proposed senate bill to equal $17 billion dollars for EMR-ish stimulus and divide this virtual money by stakeholders treating each stakeholder as an equal share, the University of Virginia Health System could anticipate a stimulus bailout for EMR = $414,735. I don’t think EPIC would ever consider any EMR project for $414,735.

Warning: All fact and figures are subject to change by the Senate and the House predicting to be extended ad nauseam - - Transparency with cataracts.

Mr. H. you are spot on concerning the Sacramento News and Review. A more wretched hive socialism is hard to find; it makes even the "progressive" New Republic look mainstream. However the staff does have a strong civil libertarian streak at least.

On your concerns about replacing Daschle: a "task force" of eggheads in Washington cannot adapt to changing markets. As I have noted here in the past, even the less elastic healthcare market is not immune to our current situation. This holds true whether you are a provider, payor, or HIT developer. No one in DC can look out for you, or set your course in these times better than you. I personally wish for a non-interventionist HHS secretary. That seems unlikely, since the euro-fetishists are in a greater frenzy now than in the days of Hillarycare.

I've never been to TEPR, but if they were trying to be like HIMSS, I welcome their end and hope for the same for the HIMSS Convention. It will be better for HIS in the long-run for the HIMSS show to die a quick death. It will be empty this year, especially with Cerner, Meditech, and (soon) others TBN not attending either.

Sign me up for the non-HIMSS HIS industry conference somewhere (no exhibit halls). Make it cheap, fun, and minimize the wallking please.
