Mr. HIStalk and USA: Phil Hartman of SNL fame used to play a role of Mr. Subliminal. On 10/6/07, I felt like ole Phil's ghost is back.

"A few people [jerks, nit-pickers, trouble makers] gave me a few names of customers that use USA"

"I don't know these customers or seen them in a CIO presentation [geeks, wallflowers, undesirables] nor have I received any requests for information about them [compared to SCI Solutions, who is a proud sponsor of my blog by the way]

"USA's website lists only three new customers [I will never give them names because I would never give them the satisfaction of free advertising]"

"I talked to them years ago but we purchased a competitor [Ha...ha USA that will teach you not to pay attention to me]

"They did get a mention....but have a unwieldy name [ which would become a very attractive name if they sponsored my website like the Power Trio at SCI Solutions]

I need to go...I am laughing so hard....I am going to pee myself.

UHHS and Soarian: I agree with Bewildered. Ed has more spin than his distant relative Groucho. Candidly, I used to work for Siemens so I realize familiarity breeds contempt, but I just don't understand why Inga even gave Ed a venue to blither on about basically nothing. In my opinion, a 20+ year SMS/Siemens customer that took a risk on Soarian Financials is not a big deal or surprise. Have the readers on this blog really hammered Siemens that much? If so, was it really without merit? The big story is Siemens is 5-6 years into Soarian and most of the boats (including a healthly group of their own clients) have left the dock waving goodbye. These boats have Epic, Meditech, etc...etc proudly displayed on them. Maybe these boats will come back to dock someday but I ain't holding my breath for it.

Ed Marx shouldn't be going to THR, he should be going into politics... Let's see if we can cut through the spin....
Question: Has it lived up to expectations?
Ed's Spin Answer: We have had a long-term relationship with Siemens....
What He Means: No, we expected to be much further along after 5 years
Question: Which modules would you say are fully developed versus those that still need work?
Ed's Spin Answer: You probably need to talk with Liz Novak, the VP directly leading this and has more direct knowledge....
Commentary: He must know, but doesn't want to say. I'm sure Ed has been in plenty of meetings and knows exactly what's working and what they're waiting for... does he really want THR to think he doesn't know the basic details of his former employer's biggest IT project ever?
Question: What have you heard is on the development agenda?
Ed's Spin Answer: I struggle to give you specifics, but they do have regular releases that we have helped develop and test...
Commentary: There weren't any specifics in the entire interview... through the lines I read that they wanted one integrated database at the start (back in 2002), have very little implemented five years later (two small hosptitals and a couple of departments for scheduling (some of which were only on paper)), and the results from Siemens were so poor that 18 months ago, when they wanted to replace their clinical system, they didn't care that much about single database that they abandoned the strategic relationship and the single vendor, all-Siemens model to get a clinical system from Eclipsys (when the Siemens clinical system is far more developed than its financial system).

Given that he's leaving University Hospitals, I would have expected more from Ed.

I thought theses comments on PHR to be really profound:
1- "Why anyone thinks our industry should connect patients to doctors before we connect doctors to their own data via other doctors and hospitals constantly blows my mind.”

2- "people have relationships with physicians, not Web sites"

I think these 2 quotes sums it up. A PHR is not the end game here. The doctor-business needs to wired-up first. If as a physician I cannot get my patients data from the various sources (hospitals, labs, collaborating physicians), the PHR will gain little traction. Also, these large companies cannot bypass their physicians by getting at our patients via websites. Patients still trust their doctors.

Re: Document Management Software - I concur with the assessment that Epic's software isn't scalable. They encourage customers to look at third party vendors. The design of image-centric document management software is a bit of an art and not a science. Some designers want to store the image in a database, others with points and the image in a file system, and those systems that really perform - actually make their own file system.
